Top Ten Reasons Family Businesses Succeed

January 16 – 7:30-9:00 a.m.

Ohio Dominican University – Alumni Hall

1216 Sunbury Road, Columbus, 43219

It has been said that if you “fail to plan then you are planning to fail”. That is especially true for family businesses, and can have dire consequences for the business and your family. How well is your family business prepared for the long-term? You’ll find out in the first educational program of 2014, presented by Ken Heiberger, of Heiberger Paving, Suzanne Amstutz, of Ohio Power Tool and Bea Wolper and facilitated by Marty Bretz of Rider & Reinke Financial Group.

The program will focus on 10 avoidable missteps that can trip up your plans for the future and guide you through solutions for creating a formal succession plan, drafting a buy-sell agreement, estate planning, utilizing key advisors, and more. Don’t miss this informative program that can change the direction of your business and set you on a course for success!

RSVP to Heather Howell at admin@familybusinesscenter.com or 614-253-4820. The program is free for Conway Center members and $35 for non-members. First-time family business leaders may attend one program as our guest.

Be Prepared: Critical Family Business Discussions for Life Changing Events

February 20, 7:30-9:00 a.m.

Ohio Dominican University – Alumni Hall

1216 Sunbury Road, Columbus, 43219

In every family business there are conversations that you need to have sooner or later. You know, the discussions that you put off as long as possible or that have you squirming in your seat just thinking about them. From making funeral plans, to discussing financial plans and challenges, to telling a family member that it’s time to step down — these topics are just plain difficult for many of us to talk about. We worry about family members’ reactions, we fear that our worst thoughts will be confirmed, or we stall because we’re afraid to confront the situation.

To help you plan for these critical conversations and begin having them now, Mike Schoedinger, of Schoedinger Funeral and Cremation Service, Tim Gast, of Regal Beverage Concepts, and Kelly Jasin, of Emens & Wolper Law Firm, will share their experiences (both positive and negative) with you during this program. We hope that it will save you from unnecessary worry and open the door to honest discussions that will eliminate any misperceptions about these sensitive issues.

RSVP to Heather Howell at admin@FamilyBusinessCenter.com or 614-253-4820. The program is free for Conway Center members and $35 for non-members. First-time family business leaders may attend one program as our guest.

Bring your spouse and start your Valentine’s Day out right by learning and exchanging strategies for working together, making decisions, and delegating tasks in your family business. You’ll be glad you did!

Directors’ Insight

The new year is a chance for a new beginning — a time to plan, re-focus, and commit to achieving goals that are important to you, your family, and your business. Of course, that means taking time to identify what you want to accomplish and setting aside time to do it. For us, it means taking a large list of projects we would love to implement, identifying which ones are most important for our members, and using our resources to achieve as many as possible.

As you make plans for your business in the coming year, please let us know of areas where we should devote our time. Are you working on succession this year? Establishing an advisory board? Trying to expand your development efforts? Grooming a next generation leader for a new role? Whatever your focus, we would like to help.

Thanks to the generosity of companies who have already sent in extra dues, or donated to the Center! Thank you to: Advance Sign Group, Atlas Butler Heating and Cooling, Buckeye Boxes, Columbus Equipment Company, Converse Electric, Crane Group Co., Emens & Wolper Law Firm, George J.
